Impressionist Palette - The Painter Installation

The processing sketch can be found in here. The program is taking a picture using a mouse click and starts to draw the painting in impressionist style.

The program goes trough random x and y location pixels take the R , G, B values of that particular pixel and uses that value to fill the brush stroke on that location. Because of this process of picking random points one by one and putting a brush stroke over it you don't see the end result immediately. It takes a little bit time for the painting to appear. The brush stroke by brush stroke reveal of the painting mimics the actual process of portrait making. The subject need to sit down for a bit to be able to see the end product.

I am trying to implement a tool that would save the painting and email it to the person but I couldn't be able to figure it out yet. UPDATE : IT IS SAVING NOW :)

I wanted to create the sense of oil painting by placing a canvas on an easel and project the image on the canvas. It makes the experience much more organic.

I am hoping to add different brush strokes with the use of comparison in the RGB colors of the pixels - For Example if the pixel color is dark use this brush stroke , if it is close to the skin tone use this stroke.

"Van Gogh Palette" Coming to Life

 

The Van Gogh Palette is almost ready for action. What I am using in the program is a pointillizing technique to visualize the captured image. Right now the image from the camera is captured by a mouse click and immediately the program starts to draw the brush strokes using the color of the pixel at the x and y location of the image taken. The end product becomes a portrait that is made of brush strokes. At the moment the brush is only a simple rectangle but it still looks pretty :)

My next step is going to be to come up with different brush strokes and place them in designated areas of the image. For example the peripheral can be done by using a different brush and the face can be made with a different brush.

During the process the image doesn't appear suddenly, it takes time for it to form the portrait and you witness the process , stroke by stroke. I want to keep this process since I want to mimic a painting being made in front of your eyes.

I have started to play with the OpenCv blob detection too to capture the image at the right moment.

From here on it is going to be all about tweaking. Here is a video of the process too. Stay tuned :)

Final in the horizon, what to do, what to do!

Processing is wrapping up and it's time to think about a final proposal. A part of me wants to discover new horizons beside my obsession of drawing tools but my heart is telling me to stick with my first love and continue on doing something interesting with a drawing palette. I've been fascinated  by the brush strokes of the great impressionists , Monet, Rembrandt, Van Gogh.. I would like to continue investigating a way to mimic their greatness in a program. This time around I would like to play with the idea of  SELF PORTRAITS in art. It is one thing to be able to paint like Van Gogh but wouldn't it be great if you could make your own "self portrait" in Van Gogh's brush strokes?

My proposal is to create a program that would mimic Van Gogh's brush strokes that would let the user paint their own face on the canvas.

This project will be consisting of multiple steps. First of all the processing sketch that will be working with a webcam to record the user's portrait. Once the picture is taken the user can start with a blank canvas and by moving his/her tool on the canvas, the portrait will become visible to the eye, Voila! You have your self portrait done by Van Gogh :)

Another step that I am thinking of is to actually use a canvas on the wall and by using video mapping and projection, make the portrait look like it's on an actual painting hang on the wall. This can be done in real time by the user actually painting on the canvas or by a remotely projected surface other than the location that is created. I have to figure that one out for now but first and for most I have to figure out how to make the palette work.

For the processing sketch probably what I would need is to come up with a way to recognize the facial traits. So the end product becomes more of a professional work rather than taking all of the pixels and making them go in one direction.

If I can manage to create couple of different palettes to work, that way I can control where I want them to be generated. For example using spiral strokes around the eyes, linear strokes around the shoulders and maybe random strokes for the hair?

This will be my first step towards the project, coming up with the processing sketch that will be creating these strokes. I have couple of ideas on that, we'll see how it goes.

Let The Grass Grow

In this processing sketch I am trying to make grass grow from the crevices of sidewalk stones. Unfortunately couldn't figure out to upload as a javascript so you can download the processing sketch and the data from here . Here is a sneak pick of the visuals.

ICM Midterm Idea

So, It is that time of the semester. We have to present a midterm project idea and next week will be the presentation. I've been playing with this idea of a digital painting program. It started with making squares on the screen with a mouse click. The trick is the squares vary in size and color according to where you place them in the screen.

You can see it above. In this sketch it takes a long time to fill the screen and there isn't a lot of different size or color. It consist of 4 different type of squares.

My goal is to create a program to mimic brush strokes by putting an element each time you click on the screen. The stroke weight would be constant but the color will be changed according to where you place your mouse. Another thing that I want to add is to create clusters of brush strokes so each time you click you don't end up with just one stroke on the canvas but multiple of them clustering around your mouse cursor.

The end product that I am looking for is something like Van Gogh's Starry Night painting. You can see the strokes of different colors. I would like to be able to provide the same effect to the user.

This is my midterm idea, wish me luck on executing.
